It might only be May but the office staff can’t wait for August!

That’s right, the 2nd annual Nitinat Lake Crew Event is a go for this summer. The offical dates for Windfest are August 16th/17th but we are hoping to convince as many of you as possible to come to the Island on the 13th or earlier and head up to the lake with us early in order to get a chance to demo all the new 09 gear.

For those of you new to the idea Windfest is a super fun kite fest full of races, freestyle competitions, bonfires, beach parties (if you wish) and excellent local foods (salmon, crab, hot cakes, mmmm). Ocean Rodeo uses each year’s windfest as a way to kick off the new season’s gear launch and to bring together as many of our Crew of riders as possible.

Further details will be released later and official requests for your commitment will be needed in order to get the event clothing organized and camping numbers taken care of but for now start putting in the over time hours and look to set aside as much of that week as possible to join us here on the island and meet your fellow riders.

Out of town folk will want to look to fly to Victoria International (YYJ). Those coming overseas will likely need to fly into Vancouver (YVR), Seattle (SEA) or Calgary (YYC) first and then take a connector over to the island. People planning on driving over can come via Vancouver with BC Ferries, Port Angeles Washington on the Coho or Anacortes with Washington State Ferries. Of course, there is also the float planes in and out of the island too!

So far my team rider Danny and myself are coming from the UK
I will sit in the corner of the camp site taking bets on who can beat Danny on dinking, fornicating and generally making a complete ass of oneself.
A word of warning to any Scottish visitors please don?t wear a kilt otherwise both you and Danny will have a big surprise.

I think I’m gonna leave mine at home.

I dont wear a kilt, but I look great in a skirt! Although im not sure I would be entirely safe!

KLM is alligned with NW, but fine. I’ve flown them a few times and have had nothing but good experirences with them. I have also flown Alaska several times and found them to be a good alternative.

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but they stopped afternoon teas and gin cocktails as it was attracking the bears and cougars. You’ll have to make do with local beer, Cdn Club whisky & sodas,  dark rum and back bacon.

I can tell you, Sunrise, that the Proles over here love our Gin and Tonic and will be more than happy to splash into one as early as you want to start cutting cucumbers for the accompanying sammy. I mean, come on! Of course we’ll be drinking Gin and Juice , Snoop Dogg will be up there with us!

Looking forward to the British Invasion , it’s been too long since I’ve hung out with holligans.

We also have a very solid Crew expected from Oregon and San Francisco, along with the usual suspects from Alberta, Vancouver and of course the local boys and girls…this year’s event should be amazing!

Despite the below text I am really looking forward to my inaugural trip to Canada and Nitinat 2008. Deepest darkest Welsh Wales for the UK Crew Event should be a breeze in comparison :!:

‘Talk softly so it knows what you are.’ Yeah Right

Bear Safety

Although most bears are simply travelling through and make
every effort to avoid humans, a bag of garbage or some unattended food
on a picnic table may be irresistible to their keen sense of smell.
Bears are not tame, gentle or cuddly; they are unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

At the campground store food in air-tight containers in your RV or car trunk.
Store garbage with your food, out of reach of bears.
Avoid fish smells—they are a strong attractant for bears.
Cook and eat well away from your tent.
Clean up immediately and thoroughly.
The odours of cosmetics, toothpaste and insect repellent can attract
bears. These should be stored out of reach with your food and garbage,
never in your tent. Leave strongly perfumed items at home.
Always sleep in a tent—not under the stars.

Some Bear Facts:

Bears are as fast as racehorses, on the flats, uphill or downhill
Bears are strong swimmers.
Bears have good eyesight, good hearing, and an acute sense of smell.
All black bears and young grizzlies are agile tree climbers; mature
grizzlies are poor climbers, but they have a reach up to 4 metres.
If a bear is standing up it is usually trying to identify you. Talk softly so it knows what you are. Move away, keeping it in view. Do not make direct eye contact.

Wolf Safety

Normally, wolves are secretive and will run away when they encounter people. Some wolves, however, are losing their fear of humans and may approach camping areas.

If a wolf appears and acts unafraid or aggressive, take the following
action as soon as you notice the animal:
Do not allow the wolf to approach any closer than 100 metres.
Raise your arms and wave them in the air to make yourself appear larger.
Back away slowly, do not turn your back on the wolf.
Make noise, throw sticks, rocks and sand at the wolf.

Cook and store food away from sleeping areas. Suspend food, toiletries, garbage and other loose objects on a rope between trees, out of reach of wildlife.
Wolves have been reported removing personal and other non-food items from campsites.
Use areas below high tide mark, away from camp, in an area of high
tidal exchange for toilets - do not use the upland areas, wolves will
feed on human excrement.

Can someone give me an idea on temperatures at that time of year. Planning on wearing a wetsuit for most of the day or T shirt and shorts.

How chilly do the evenings get?

Do I need such things as hiking boots for the terrain-if I have the bottle to venture too far away from civilization that is

Just off out now to practice for my 100metres sprint

wildlife

I apologize for my remarks about the wildlife at Nitinat. During the Windfest it will be so busy at Nitinat the wildlife will stay deep in the woods. The partiers will be out in force though.

Looking forward to meeting some of the Crew for far away - great to put faces to the names and avatars on the forum.

The real hazards are : 1. Heavy equipment on the logging roads . (It’s tempting to drive like Colin Mcrae until you drift around a corner to find the rd. 100% occupied by a truck carrying enough logs to rebuild all the homes on your street !!!) 2. Soft shoulders. (Thats the edge of the freshly graded rd. that drops off 10 feet as your passenger informs you as you slide over avoiding the logging truck) 3. Rock damage from the overtaking vehicles on the logging rd. 4. Vandals helping themselves to your belongings from your abandoned vehicle as you hitchhike back to civilization to find another wheel tire after your second puncture. ... No worries though, it helps keep the adventure in west coast camping !!!        Here are a couple of links with more input:      http://www.bigwavedave.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3212                http://www.bigwavedave.ca/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3216

Last weekend I wore a 3mm and was boiling. Many were in only board shorts. Bring a 3mm and a 2mm or a shorty if you have one…the water temps are cool but not cold, really depends on what the air temp is. Last weekend was close to 30°.

This is one of my favorite photo’s from last years event.
The owner of this van was not going to let anything keep him from getting to the lake, and those roads are brutal!

[url]

He was able to walk around the camp site and find the parts needed to drive out when it was time to leave, now that says a lot about the kind of hospitality sailors in the NW are capable of.

My favorite moment from last year?
A short but very moving conversation with a man named John Read who was camped next to me that one nite…and waking up in my tent to the sound of a large bird rushing though the trees at dawn. I was wearing ear plugs too….kinda creepy huh.
Oh, and getting on a mako wide for the 1st time…that was so good I couldn’t stop smiling, in fact I’m still smiling every time I put that beauty of a board under my feet.

Less than a week to go until Knicker Elastic Lake receives visitations form the Mother Country. So brush up your English as we don?t want to spend all trip re-educating the old Colonials.

What?s this about bears ? You can?t fool us .We?ve herd C.W. McCall explaining that the only Bears are in cars blocking bridges or in the air. http://www.narrowgauge.org/4x4/cw_pages/lyrics/spirit/convoy.html
Bears coming into our tented village stealing food .I thought I was going to Canada not Rhodesia

I found a few hints to tell when you have left Canadian civilization and entered the camping ground.
You can entertain yourself for more than an hour with a fly swatter.
Your dog goes “oink!”
You think the Nutcracker is something you did off the high dive.
You know how to milk a goat.
You’ve ever stood outside a bathroom and heckled someone inside.
Turning on your lights involves pulling a string.
You have a refrigerator just for beer.
Your wife owns a camouflage nightie.
You’ve ever worn cowboy boots with Bermuda shorts.
You think the Styrofoam cooler is the greatest invention of all time.
You take your dog for a walk and you both use the same tree
You can’t take a nap without at least one hand tucked inside your pants.
Roll on the 8th

Rich,

I think you got confused with some Jeff Foxworthy quotes in there mate!

Thinking deep south!

i.e.
-If someone shouts “ho down” and your girlfriend hits the floor.
-If your home is mobile and you have 18 cars that arent.
etc etc

Just adding my kudos to the success that was Windfest - only sorry I didn’t get to meet more crewmembers.  I was camped at the complete other end of the beach!

Anyway, that said, what’s the status of a January crew event.  What’s the forecast of a repeat La Ventana adventure for early 2009???

Cheers
