Aaaahh at last. A thread all of my own. Now I know I have truly peaked. Andy’s obviously feeling my pain. But this would be a uselful forum to explain the general nuttiness that is Noo Noo World.

KITES

Harry do you honestly think any of this has prevented me from visiting the odd public house? No No No. Much to learn young padawan (including posture)

Richard what blinkin good would every size do? I cant even make my mind up between kites I don’t have yet. Do really thing I’d be better if I had them all?

Right, serious question for Harry. What’s the low end on your 10m?

errr.. not sure. i’ve been first on the water on a light day with a surfboard and on my twin i can ride well when people are on 13s just working it fast.. but until it gets to about 16-17 or so you cant unhook or anything like that because its not powered enough not to stall. if its going to be your biggest kite id say 11 would be pretty cushty. how early does your 16 get going? if its got decent low end then keep it and get a 10.. if you want to replace it get the 11.

Yo Harry. My 16m is a bit of an enigma. Very stally kite so it doesn’t like low winds. I also fly it on 21m lines which really sharpen it up but it certainly knocks a couple of knots off the low end.

15mph is my fun barrier. Below that is effort with no reward. It literally comes to life at 15mph. Longer lines might bring that down to say 13mph but the kite starts to feel Sponge Bob Square Pants.

The 11m was awesome fun in 18mph. 25mph hanging on!

Well you probably expect this from me, but add a pulley at the top V section. This way the kite can tilt over the bridle, far less stalling. I haven’t had any kite with this setup stall on me..ever! Worse case, unhooked in light stuff will just slowly drift back, but never big old back stalls like the old kite days. Regardless if it is a Rise or a ONE. Any bridle kite will benefit from an autoregulating bridle…

Cheers Wisha but unless you’re a real lightweight kiting below 15mph just doesn’t really happen does it. Above that that 16m and me get on pretty fine but I do need to see how she behaves un hooked.

get a 10 then spend 45 quid on a 5-6ft surfboard. thats your lower wind setup right there. i love it because theres no point trying to do anything in those conditions but learning to pop/tack a surfboard is epic fun and the 10 is all you need on it!

jeepers dudes. Have a go at me for not making my mind up. You lot are worse!

right.
below 15mph I hardly bother. 16m maybe, surfboard too may be an option.

15-20mph is the 1st grey area. 16m will do it but new toy being smaller is obviously more fun.

20 - 25 = 2nd grey area. Here we’re entering the overlap between the new toy and my current 9m.

25+ = Got to be the 9m

Noo Noo,

I feel your pain - but honestly, you need to lose the 16 and the 9.

Then for 2 kite quiver pick up an 11 and an 8—-> will have you covered from 13 knots to 30.  For a three kite quiver go 11, 9, 7.

Just commit…...you’ll be very happy.

(I’m basing all of this on my own gear and weight (88 kgs, 12, 10, 8, 6m 2009 Rises).)

Agreed, less than 13 knots (about 14 mile) is a bit of a snooze session anyway. Too much kite to pump up, 2 little fun to have. Add a loop to just about everymove and things get a bit better, except for the tacks to get back to where you started :(

CAM - I think I’m leaning in your direction. 11m now followed by a smaller kite to suit later.

My plan is basically to invest in 1 new kite per year rotating between sizes. This means the kit is kept quite fresh, decent resale and it doesn’t mean a bank breaking quiver update every year. Well that’s the plan anyway! It could all go the other way at any moment.

My dilema is worsened having witnessed the quite stunning performance of the 10m. The day in question I was struggling to get any decent upwind tack on a 12m Diablo. The wind was Ok just a fair incoming tide taking the edge off. Young Harry “Poo stance” (who weighs the same as me by the way) was boosting some mighty fine stuff on his 10m. jealous I was…........

from experience on the 10 i would say that its all good.. unless you want to unhook in which case a bit more grunt would be ideal. you need a reasonable amount of wind to unhook the 10 properly without relying on apparent wind. plus if the 2010s have better top end then 11 would make sense? seeing how much i can hold a 10 in?

That’s it, cheers Harry A reply I was looking for. 11m it is with a test on 24m and 21m lines to find my personal preference.  That little bit extra low end for unhooked stuff around 18 - 20mph sounds like the trick.

Mr Bank Manager where are you?

Yo Woody mate

I’m middle man 75kgs. The fears for me and the 11m was how close I was to the top end on Saturday (after the squall) at Vansurf. 25mph or so and I was lit. Fun though. Friday in 18mph was as sweet as it gets, plenty enough power to unhook (badly) and the kite gives you soo much confidence.

So 11m for me with another dilema later trying to find the right size to partner it. Sweet spot from just below 25mph to 30mph. I don’t mind fighting above that!

Awesome Harry. Would have loved to stayed “hardcore” but I’m simply not good enough to get the best out of them. BUT a blast on the new devils would be most welcome. Especially as they’ve been redesigned since my 2008’s

Ahh, cool, thanks Col, I just wanted to guage where you were at. I’m about 13 (83kg ish)stone at the mo but should be back down to my fighting weight of 12 stone soon I hope. Just trying to get an idea of other people around the same weight as me are going for.

Ben and I taked a lot about it last night and Ben reckons either 11 or 12 biggest and 7 or 8 mid/small kite for me.

Richard, can I borrow that 11? I’ll pay postage :0)

Woody, I’m around 12st and the 12m is my main kite.  I’ve got an 8m Rise on order and will report back when it gets here and I can fly the thing.  I’m also hoping to do a back-to-back session with my 12m and the new 11m when the 11m demo comes back to the South-West.  Of course, it won’t be as useful as you trying it out for yourself. smile

Bottle of Tipp-ex is used when printing accounts…........ zipper

Anyway it worked really well unhooked but had to careful. Power up too much or be too aggressive when steering and the monitor would go flying. No hint of stalling though.

Tut

As a responsible dealer I would expect a customers every wish to be catered for. Therefore if OR make lots of kites sizes in different colours it seems reasonable for you to have avery size in every colour with every bar combo. Its blatantly obvious to everybody that a red kite flies different to a black one. While pink ones just flutter around with a little snigger and a giggle.

Finger out man!

in respons eto your question yes I’ll take the 9m (Black please) along with Dave’s 8m too.

Sorry Colyn - the 8m is now in my sweaty hands as of this morning. I’ve fettled it but typically the wind wasn’t as strong as it was supposed to be today, so I had to spend all day on my 12m with the Mako bashing out re-entries on nice peeling set waves.  OK, so they were only 2ft faces, but that’s not the point.

What I would love to know is how do they pack the kite so small for shipping?  I can *never* get it back to the same size.

I also (temporarily) have a new bar, which as everyone says, is very very nice.  Shame it has to go to it’s owner tomorrow.

Hey noo noo you’ve really progressed now that you have that ‘010 Rise 11m coupled with the sweet new SLE bar. Is that ‘Black Rock?

If you’re looking to partner the 11m with just one kite and have a 2 kite quiver perhaps you should consider the 8m? If you want 3 kites then the obvious answer would be to get the 7 and 9 to go with your 11m.

As for affording more gear….that’s easy. First of all stop wasting money chasing girls, drinking and smoking. Put the decorating ‘on hold’ and no more shiny chrome for that VW Transporter. Oh and eat baked beans on toast for a month too. That should be a good start!

Has your new board dilemma began yet or is that after Christmas?

Black Rock??? not quite! lol

yes i’m think 8m probably but I want another couple of blasts on the 11m for sure. It’s given me another dilema.

On 21m lines the kites has real zip. It’s beautifly responsive BUT it obviously takes a bit way from the low end and a little bit of the boosts and float has gone. I need another blast on the 24m lines. I may consider looking at the bigger bar for it. Not sure. Love the kite though - exactly what i wanted.
hard core saving required again I guess. Boards crikey don’t get me going. And the van development is a must to ensure future kiting tours
