Am looking for user determined ranges for the 08 rise.

Please provide kite size, your weight and, just a general description of board. (ie 135x40 or low wind door, allrounder, mako, surfboard etc..)

Low end = when you can consistently hold your ground

High end = when the devil on one shoulder agrees with the angel on the other that it really is time for you to head in.

Thanks.

250 lbs - 16m Rise 2007
          12m Rise 2008

Ocean Rodeo Mako 150 mid to high wind board
Decosse Custom 131 x 44

Range in the kites are amazing the 16m pull like a 20 turns like a 12, the 12 like a 16 and turns like a ten, I’m covered, I need a big high wind kite so I’m undecided between the 10 or the 8 but at my weight I might go with the 10, the kites have amazing range had the 16 out in 20knts and could have been out with the 12 easily.

Kiting is great can’t wait to retire so I can do it full time.  Bring on the wind.

148 lbs with a Mako 150 Freeride.

8m Rise: If it’s 15-25mph I am on this kite. If it consistently gusts over 25 I rig smaller.

10M Rise: I use this kite when I have to work the 8m too much to stay upwind.

12M Rise: I rarely need this kite, except in marginally kiteable conditions when bigger guys are struggling on 16m plus kites. I combine it with the Mako Surf directional.

Cheers,

Evan

190 lbs with a Flexi 135x40

10m Rise Venturi:  Low End kicks in at 14 knots…gets good at 17, better at 20,  28 or so is the highest I’ve had it and it felt fine.

12m Rise Venturi:  Low End at 12 knots, good at 14, Sweet spot is 14-21, haven’t had it out past that but could easily do 25 I think

14m Rise Venturi Low End 11knots, good at 12-20 but I rig my smaller kites as soon I am able.

16m Rise (07):  Low End 11 knots, have pretty much put it away since getting my 14.  The thing about this kite was hang time in the 12 - 16 knot range - it was unreal.

In short - best low end of any kites I have ever ridden - Last year I wouldn’t have thought I would ever need a 10, now I get tons of sessions on mine.  The difference between the 10 & 12 for me is little more power/pop in the mid range (14-18 knots) though I could realistically ride either most of time.  This seems to be the consensus at most the demo days as riders are trying an 8, 10 and 12 all in the same session.  I am not sure why, but the vents seems to add to the top end vs the 07’s.

Of course, you don’t know the accuracy of the wind readings.  I slunk off work yesterday and was measuring 16 knots on the beach, when another guy asked me what I was getting.  His meter was reading 10 knots!  He said “well that explains why I’ve been telling people I can get out in 6 knots”.  Doh!

pretty sure I can eyeball the dif between both 6 and 10, and 10 and 16 knots.

Been at this a while.

Dont own a wind meter and dont really feel the need to run out and get one.  Kinda like pressure guages on kite pumps.  Not what I need to have a good time.

Cheers,

Thanks for the input, keep em commin.

This is a cool topic…

225 lbs
12M Rise (2007 with 2008 bridle)

Low end (with a low wind board/surfboard) - 13 mph

High end - up to probably 25-30?
(not sure about top end, haven’t had much wind this year!)

I love this setup, but gotta add some more Rises to the quiver, right? so, thinking about adding a 14M and an 8M 2008 Rise.. (or a 10? can’t make up my mind!)

Any feedback appreciated!

I would muddy your waters by saying that out of the range I like the 10m the best…it is just such a beautiful kite. That being said, if you have a 12m I would go for an 8 and a 16 to round it out perfectly. (At your weight I think the extra size of the 16 would help… generally though the 14 is the biggest kite you will need).

185 lbs 6’3”  132x41 twin

The 08 10m Rise is my biggest kite and gets me going on my twin in anything over 15mph.  It gets good over 18mph and since I got it as the season in San Francisco was dying I haven’t had it out in anything over mid 20’s.  I’ve got a 7m One for when the wind pushes into the 30’s

I have also ridden the 10m in 12-15mph on a strapless 6’6” surfboard, but I feel like anything under 15mph isn’t really worth it.

At your weight, what is the upper end of the 8m Rise?

I was riding the ‘08 12 Rise very comfortably from 12-3pm, Here’s the wind graph. Kite was barely depowered.

rise range

185-190 lbs
Flexi 135x40 (2007 purple one which by the way is a great board)

I just ordered a 12 and an 8 to be my two kites.  My feeling after using my friends OR quiver at least 10 times is that an 8 and 12 will get me out and having fun from 13 to 35.  The consensus between myself and my buddy is that the 12M 2008 will be our number one kite as the prevailing conditions here are 16-22.

10m 2007 rise with 08 bridle mod: I was out on my 15 boxer SLE, I grabbed the 10 from my friend and was able to stay up wind in marginal winds, like 11-13.  In fact it was better than my 15 SLE which was dragging me down wind a bit.  I’m not saying I was throwing huge air but I was riding and jumping off little waves.  No idea what the high end is, my guess would be 25+.  After about 8 long tacks I ended up only 100 feet downwind from where I started.  And this was in waves and very marginal winds.

14m 2008 Venturi Rise:  I took this out while my buddy had a 12M 08 Rise Venturi.  Conditions were 14-18.  He claimed to be perfectly powered up on the 12.  I felt the same on the 14 although I had it trimmed in a bit and I was afraid to try anything too extreme.  The jumps were insane.  The smallest little wave was giving me a 2 second 8 foot jump without even sending the kite.  Sending the kite and timing a larger wave just right resulted in monster jumps.  Almost too high.  And long long float times.  I wouldn’t want to take this out over about 18-19.

I think with the Rise you should always choose the smaller size if you are split between two sizes.  They have an uncanny ability.

I just heard from kite-lines that my kites are shipping today, can’t wait!!!
